Kaats

The Game Kaats is played by teams of three players, each concisting of one server and two fieldplayers, one of whom must also serve. The object of the game is to accumulate kaatsen. A kaats is the place from which the kaats ball is returned; the place is marked with a white block (first kaats/k1).

Depending on the score the teams switch after one or two kaatsen have been made. The server goes to the field and the fieldteam then has to do the serving. The field team-players try to strike past the kaatsen one by one. If they're succesful two points are earned per kaats; if not, it's two points fot the server. Then the field-team playersagain tot try to get new kaatsen while the server tries to hinder them. Points also can be earned directly by the player gaining them alone or through the errors of the opponent. Include are: ∑ A faulty serve: 2 points ∑ A serve that can't be dealt with (ace): 2 points ∑ Serving over the side-lines ("kwaadslag"): 2 points ∑ Serving over the upper-line (behind the serving box): 2 points
Telegraph pole, ball and kaats gloves

In scoring, kaats is simular tot tennis. A kaats game is over after six firsts. A first is scored when 8 points are reached, the points being awarded in incremements of two. Thus 2, 4, 6 and then the first. After each first the counting of points begins again. Two firsts are called a play. The points are then hung on the telegraph pole in the following way: ∑ red, 2 plays (=four firsts) and two points ∑ white, 1 play, 1 first (=three firsts) and 4 points. A full telegraph pole shows the score of five firsts for both teams and 6-6. Whoever gets the next 2 points has won the game. Kaats is played with a ball weighing + 24 grams and with a diameter of 4 cm which is covered in leather and filled with calves' hair. Since the ball is rather hard it's necessary to wear a kaats glove to give the hand protection.
